Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: The Prophet Mohammed
Description: Dante and Virgil encounter the Prophet Mohammed and 'Ali, accused of sowing dissent and thus condemned to this area of the Eighth Circle. Mohammad rips open the wound in his chest to display his entrails, even as the sword wielding demon behind him deals out the same punishment to others. The engraver, Felix Jean Gauchard (1825-1872), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
