Ugolino Finds His Family Dead

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: Ugolino Finds His Family Dead

Description: Count Ugolino wakes to find his sons and grandsons dead of starvation in the tower at Pisa. Both the text and the engraving are vague as to whether he simply died of starvation himself or turned to cannibalism. The engraver, John Quartley (active in Tours between 1835 and 1867), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
