Description: Dante and Virgil come upon the shade of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca gnawing viciously on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri. Ruggieri had Ugolino and his family imprisoned within a tower in Pisa where he let them all starve to death. The engraver, Charles Maurand (active 19th c), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
