Image Title: Dante Threatens the Shade of Bocca
Description: When Dante accidentally steps on one of the frozen souls he asks to know the sinner’s name; the soul refuses to tell him and Dante resorts to threats. He is revealed to be Bocca degli Abati, a fellow Florentine who betrayed his party (the Guelphs) at a battle in 1260. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
