Description: Dante and Virgil traverse the frozen expanse of Lake Cocytus and the region of Caïna. Here, souls who betrayed their families are frozen in the lake with only their head left protruding. Virgil warns his charge to watch where he steps, lest he tread on any of them. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom right.
