Description: Ephialtes and the other titans who attacked Olympus are chained here as guardians of the Ninth Circle gateway, a deep pit leading down into the frozen Lake Cocytus. They, like Nimrod, are chained to the pit for their affronts to heaven. The engraver, Georges Léon Alfred Perrichon (d. 1907), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
