Description: Dante and Virgil encounter two native Italians, Griffolino of Arezzo and Capocchio. Griffolino was known for cheating one Albero of Siena out of a sizable amount of coin by promising to teach him to fly, only to be burned at the stake by Albero’s friend the Bishop of Siena. Capocchio was a skilled alchemist, renowned for his prowess in counterfeit. The engraver, Pierre Verdeil (b. 1812), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
