Description: Dante shields his face from the horrifying appearance of Bertran de Born, who allegedly fermented the rebellion between Henry III and his father, King Henry II. His brain has been severed from his body even as he severed the relationship between father and son. The engraver, Auguste Pontenier (1820-1888), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
