The souls trapped here, such as Diomedes and Ulysses of classical mythology, are clothed in flames. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
