Image Title: A Dreadful Swarm of Serpents
Description: This area of the Eighth Circle, reserved for thieves, is filled with every manner of snake. The souls condemned here are bound by the snakes and wither into ash when they are bitten, only to be reconstituted so as to continue their suffering. The engravers, Francois Auguste Trichon (b. 1814) and Joseph-Julien-Guillaume Dulompré (b. 1789) have placed their signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
