Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: College of the Mourning Hypocrites
Description: As they proceed deeper into the Eighth Circle Dante and Virgil come upon the College of Mourning Hypocrites, sentenced to walk in heavy cloaks lined with lead. Two of them recognize Dante’s Tuscan dialect and desire to speak with him, but the weight of their hoods prevents them from meeting his gaze. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
