Description: The Malebranche swoop in to accost Dante and Virgil, seeking to torture them in the same manner as the souls condemned to this area of Inferno. Virgil informs them that he and his protégé are under heavenly protection. The engraver, Bonnet Dupeyron (active 19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
