Description: This region of the Eighth Circle is reserved for barraters, the civic version of Simonites. They are tortured by demons with long forked weapons, the Malabranche, and left to suffer in pits of boiling pitch. The engraver, Noël Eugène Sotain (1816-1874), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
