Description: Dante leans over to examine the soul of Pope Nicholas III (pope from 1277-1280), Giovanni Orsini. As an alleged Simonite he is suspended upside down in a pit, while flames constantly burn the soles of his feet. The engraver, Stéphane Pannemaker (1847-1930), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
