Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Geryon’s Flight
Description: Dante clutches tightly onto his guide, Virgil, as they ride Geryon into the eighth circle of Inferno. They are both dwarfed by the size of the beast, although Dante seems much more concerned with the possibility of falling off. The engraver, Bonnet Dupeyron (active 19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
