Description: Ser Brunetto Latini (1220-1294) was a Florentine whom Dante held in great respect as an intellectual. Brunetto, who alone among the residents of the barren plain seems to have retained his composure, recognizes Dante and engages him. The engraver, Felix Jean Gauchard (1825-1872), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
