Description: As they leave the Wood of Suicides Dante and Virgil pause at the edge of a barren plain populated by the souls who committed violence against God or nature. These souls are continuously pelted with embers, like snowflakes, falling from the sky. The engraver, Gaston Raymond Ernest Monvoisin (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
