Description: At Virgil’s prompting Dante breaks a twig off one of the twisted plants, which cries out and reveals itself to be a tormented soul. The soul is in fact that of Pietro della Vigna, the former chancellor and secretary of Emperor Frederick II. He was said to committed suicide after being accused betraying his liege. The engraver, Charles Maurand (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
