Description: The band of centaurs, half-man half-horse creatures from Classical myth, are seen here hunting the condemned souls languishing in Phlegethon, the river of blood. Their duty is to shoot any soul who ventures too far out of the water. The engraver, Felix Jean Gauchard (1825-1872), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
