Description: Virgil and Dante come upon a band of centaurs, half-horse half-man creatures from Classical myth that were known for their savage nature. Nessus, Chiron, and Pholus are the named centaurs. The souls of those damned to the seventh circle on account of violent sins languish in Phlegethon, the river of blood. The engraver, Henri Théophile Hildebrand (1824-1897), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
