Image Title: The Minotaur
Description: Virgil and Dante happen upon the Minotaur, that famed beast of Classical myth born of the Queen of Crete, Pasiphae, and a white bull. He functions here as the guardian of the entrance to the seventh circle, where the violent reside. Virgil urges Dante on with a push of his hand, lest the Minotaur hinder them. The engraver, Antoine Alphée Piaud (fl. 1837-1866), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
