Anastasius II

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: Anastasius II

Description: Virgil and Dante shield their faces against the noxious smoke rising from the tomb of Pope Anastasius II, elected pope in 496. The inscription on the sepulcher says that he was lead astray by Photinus, a bishop of Sirenium who lived almost a century before Anastasius and was said to be part of the Sabellian heresy. The engraver, J. Regnier (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
