Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Farinata
Description: Dante and Virgil are addressed by one of the heretics, who reveals himself to be Farinata of the noble Uberti family. Farinata was the leader of the Imperialist (Ghibeline) party in Florence before Dante was born. The erect posture in which he holds himself communicates his disdain for those around him. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
