Image Title: The Gate of Dis

Description: Dante and Virgil are assisted by an angel, who has arrived via the ferry in the background to open the gate to the city of Dis. The damned souls that sought to deny them entrance cringe away from the angel’s heavenly presence as he opens the door with a touch of his wand. The engraver, Henri Théophile Hildebrand (1824-1997), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
