Description: Virgil tells Dante to note ‘each foul Erynnis,’ the three Furies from Classical myth who are seen here as female demons with dragon wings and snakes twining around their hideous bodies. The engraver, Antoine Alphee Piaud (active 1837-1866), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
