The city rises in the background, set against a curtain of fire, while the residents gesture animatedly with Virgil. Dante waits in shadow within the boat, obviously excluded from the conversation. The engravers, Laurent Hotelin and Jean Best (19th c.), have placed their signature at the bottom right.
