Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Phlegyas
Description: Dante and Virgil are ferried across the Styx by Phlegyas, a figure from Classical myth that burned the temple of Apollo at Delphi after the god ravaged his daughter. Filippo Argenti, a fellow Florentine, attempts to pull himself into the boat even as Phlegyas fights off other enraged souls with his oar. The engraver, Bonnet Dupeyron (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
