Description: Dante and Virgil stand on an outcropping in the Stygian lake while the souls of the wrathful claw at each other and cast their bodies on the rocks. The horizon recedes into murky darkness, echoing the blackness of the water which Dante describes. The engraver, Antoine Alphee Piaud (active 1837-1866) has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
