Virgil admonishes the ‘Curst Wolf,’ shown here with claw-like fingernails and an animalistic face, to stop hindering their progress. The engravers, Stéphane Pannemaker (1847-1930) and Ad Ligny (active 1855-1876), have placed their signatures at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
