Description: Dante encounters a fellow Florentine, Ciacco, a well-known wit who was accustomed to dining with the elite of Florence even though he was poor himself. Ciacco is shown raising himself from the mass of souls around him and pointing at Dante, recognizing him as a living being. He goes on to describe the fate of Florence in the coming years. The engraver, Pierre Verdeil (b. 1812), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
