Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Cerberus
Description: Cerberus, the three-headed canine guardian of the underworld from classical mythology, is here transformed by Dante into a demon in the third circle of hell, that of gluttony. Virgil is shown casting dirt into the ravenous creature’s mouth to trick him into letting them pass. The engraver, Antoine Alpheé Piaud (active 1837-1866), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
