Image Title: We Read No More

Description: Here Doré shows the moment that was to be Paolo and Francesca’s downfall. Francesca, the daughter of Guido of Polenta, is wed to Gianciotto Malatesta, son of the lord of Rimini. Her ill-fated love for his brother Paolo begins while they read about Lancelot together. Francesca marks their place in the book even as it falls from her hands, while Paolo leans over to kiss her. Unbeknownst to them, Gianciotto stands poised with a dagger as he prepares to execute them for their betrayal. The engraver, Adolphe Gusmand (1821-1905), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
