Francesca and Paolo

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: Francesca and Paolo

Description: Dante and Virgil crane their necks to talk with Paolo and Francesca, the doomed lovers who were summoned out of the whirling tide of souls. They are shown as distinct from the others by the light of their bodies, even as the twisting of their forms indicates that they are at the mercy of the same cruel winds that toss their compatriots about. The engraver, Adolphe Gusmand (1821-1905), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
