Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Storm of Souls
Description: Dante and Virgil stand atop a rocky precipice as the denizens of the Second Circle whirl around above them. These souls, who were unable to resist temptation in their earthly existence, are now doomed to be tossed about for eternity in the unpredictable storms of Hell. The clouds and darkness of the region obscure their vision, just as passion clouded their judgment in life. The artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
