Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: The Bright School
Description: Dante and Virgil happen upon an elite group of souls, the ‘bright school’ of poets whose brilliance and enduring popularity have not only earned them a place of honor in Limbo, but illuminated them with the light of genius. Virgil gestures towards the foremost group (Homer, shown with a sword, Ovid, Horace, and Lucan) and introduces them to Dante, in whom they recognize a fellow poet. The engraver, Stéphane Pannemaker (1847-1930), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1888), has placed his signature at the bottom left.
