Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
Image Title: Limbo
Description: Dante and Virgil enter the area known as Limbo, populated by those who are virtuous yet unbaptized and thus not candidates for salvation. Virgil reveals that he is one of the souls that reside here as they gaze upon a group of souls taking mournful repose under the shelter of a large rock. The engraver, Jules Fagnion (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1888), has placed his signature at the bottom left.
