Adam’s Brood

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: Adam’s Brood

Description: Doré has condensed the narrative of the last part of Canto III into this illustration. The souls of the damned gather on the shore of Acheron to be ferried across by Charon. Those already in the boat bemoan their fate with an intense grief that Doré has portrayed through torrid movements and an exaggerated Renaissance-style physique, while those who tarry are beaten into submission by Charon. Meanwhile, a never-ending line of condemned souls can be seen making their way down the cliffside to take their own journey across the Acheron. The engraver, Felix Jean Gauchard (1825-1872), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1888), has placed his signature at the bottom left.
