The Gate of Hell

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: The Gate of Hell

Description: Dante and Virgil pause before the gate into hell, taking note of the famous inscription in “color dim” on the crest of the arch. The inscription states that Inferno was made by the Holy Trinity after the heavenly spheres and angels, but before the mortal world. Even as it exhorts Dante to “abandon all hope,” however, Virgil tells him to leave fear and doubt behind. Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
