Image Title: Now Was the Day Departing

Description: Dante stands with his guide in a clear plateau, free at last from the dangers of the gloomy wood that plagued him in the first Canto. The starry sky and rising moon tell us that it is now nightfall, and that Dante’s journey through the gloomy wood took an entire day. As he looks forward, he contemplates his journey and steels himself for the perils ahead. The engraver, Héliodore Pisan (1822-1890), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
