Onward He Moved

Book Title: Dante's Inferno; Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. from the original of Dante Alighieri, and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré.

Author: Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321

Image Title: Onward He Moved

Description: In the last line of Canto I Dante consents to follow Virgil through Purgatory. Doré has used the large size of the landscape to convey the difficulty of the task which, as evidenced by the first Canto, Dante was unable to complete by himself. Although Virgil leads him into a shadowy cleft between two rocky slopes the brightness of the foregrounded tree informs the reader that with Virgil’s help his path is, quite literally, illuminated. The engraver, Boetzal (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
