Description: A middle-aged Dante finds himself alone in a gloomy wood. The tangled overgrowth and twisting roots surrounding Dante, along with Doré’s liberal use of light and shadow, serve to enhance the allegory of spiritual darkness in which the protagonist finds himself after straying from “the path direct”. The engraver, Adolphe Gusmand (1821-1905), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
