He wears a laurel crown which, although not part of his raiment in the Divine Comedy, has nonetheless been adopted into his portrait tradition as a symbol of his station. The engraver, Stéphane Pannemaker (1847-1930), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
