Image Title: Historiated Headpiece

Scripture Reference:

Description: This headpiece bears the Latin motto ILLUSTRATURUS UTRAMQ, which roughly translates to “Place Both in the Right Light” or “Highlight Both” in the top center of the frame. Below the motto is the head and face of an unidentifiable figure, possibly Jesus, surrounded by a nimbus. Framed by ornamental vines on each side are the torsos of two unidentifiable figures draped in toga linens possibly representative of East (Orient) and West (Occident). On the left, the man or woman holds a Patriarchal cross or Cross of Lorraine, and on the right, the figure stands next to a pair of scales and holds a Globus Cruciger with outstretched arms. The archangel Michael as psychopomp and the third horseman of the apocalypse are often both pictured in art with a pair of balances or scales (Revelation 6:5-6).
