Description: A depiction of the causes and effects of wealth. Reason (“Ratio”) drives the cart, followed by Fortune (“Fortuna”) and Wealth (“Plutus”). The goddess Nemesis lurks behind the procession above those who misuse their wealth like Midas and Tamiaius. Generosity (“Liberalitas”) whips the horse of Greed (“Avaritia”) while Good Faith (“Bona Fides”) struggles against the Deception (“Impostura”), and Equality (“Aequalitas”) whips Possession (“Usura”) while Justice (“Iustitia”) hold back Contract (“Contractus”). Engraved by Federico Zuccari (1542/3–1609) after the original design by Hans Holbein, the Younger (1498–1543).
