Image Title: Printer’s Device of William Desprez
Description: A Jansenist Printer’s Device of William Desprez (c.1629-1708). Jansenism was a Catholic movement that grew in 17th and 18th-century France, and it was drawn from the doctrines of St. Augustine of Hippo. The device features faith (represented by blindfolded woman), hope (represented by an anchor), and charity (represented by a flaming heart in her right hand). The tetragrammaton shown as the sun casts light on the scene, and a Latin inscription along the medallion reads ARDET AMANS SPE NIXA FIDES (“Loving Faith, having depended on Hope, is ablaze”). This inscription appeared in the frontispiece of all Jansenist books.
